Twenty-four teams composed of more than 100 students from 20 Nevada high schools competed though 12 fast-paced, intense rounds of STEM-based trivia questions at the 35th annual Nevada Science Bowl Saturday, Jan. 31, hosted by the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS).

Davidson Academy took top honors for the seventh year running, netting a $5,000 cash prize for their school’s math and science departments and earning the right to represent Nevada at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. in April. Hug High School placed second to take home a $3,000 cash prize, while Clark High School (Team A) came in third and earned a $1,500 cash prize.

Each year more than 15,000 students compete nationally for the opportunity to represent their school at the DOE National Science Bowl. During Saturday’s event, NNSS leaders imparted the importance of high school students’ pursuit of STEM education and how the NNSS can serve as a pathway for a meaningful career contributing to national security.

Speaking at the Science Bowl, Deputy Field Office Manager Carlos Alvarado of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Nevada Field Office said, “I like to think of this as the first step in the journey for these students, for them to really fall in love with science and pursue it as a career. They can apply that knowledge to help their neighbors and our nation, and to let that knowledge carry them as far as they want to go—to the limits of their imagination.”

Following Alvarado’s remarks, NNSS Chief of Staff Brent Baker had this to say: “You are the future leaders of this country, and it’s a bright future. Seeing you out there today, I have no doubt that our nation is going to be in good hands.”

Sponsors of the 2026 Nevada Science Bowl include the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office (signature sponsor), Mission Support and Test Services LLC (the management and operating contractor for the NNSS), and Environmental Management Nevada Environmental Program Services.
