NNSA Principal Deputy Administrator Frank A. Rose to speak
MERCURY, Nevada – The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) will dedicate the second building of the Mercury Modernization program Thursday, May 11, at 2:15 p.m.
Mercury Bldg. 2 represents an important accomplishment for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a second milestone in the Mercury Modernization program that is building state-of-the-art infrastructure to support and enable NNSS national security missions for the next 50+ years.
NNSA Principal Deputy Administrator Frank A. Rose will dedicate the new building and recognize the progress being made to revitalize and replace aged infrastructure at the NNSS. The building will be dedicated to Steven J. Lawrence, former Manager of the NNSA Nevada Field Office, for his 30 years of service to the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, and the Nevada National Security Site.
The Mercury Modernization program calls for more than $350 million to be invested in creating a campus-like environment with nine new modern facilities in Mercury and other locations within the NNSS to meet the needs of the workforce supporting the NNSA’s national security programs. The campus buildings are designed as High Performance Sustainable Buildings with net-zero energy design criteria. Mercury Bldg. 1 was formally dedicated in February 2020 and houses emergency management and information technology personnel. The Site’s Operations Command Center and Emergency Operations Center – essential services that enable our mission and ensure the safety and security of the Site, its workforce, and the general public – will move into the new building.
NNSA Nevada Field Office Manager Dr. David Bowman said, “Each building in the Mercury Modernization program represents an important milestone for NNSA. They signify progress towards our Site-wide goal of net-zero energy sustainability. This state-of-the-art building, and the future buildings in the Mercury campus, position us to continue our critically important national security work, and attract the next generation of employees.”
The program demonstrates practical application of technologies that can make facilities sustainable and more cost-effective during the long-term while also providing an example of how to effectively leverage DOE enterprise capabilities in partnership with private and public sector resources.
