Students support national security for seven summers

The 2025 Student Program is underway at the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS), with more than 70 students participating this summer. Our interns dove right in during a comprehensive, two-day orientation featuring structured training sessions, professional headshot opportunities and informational booths. This format introduces students to the NNSS and provides the resources they need as they work in various departments throughout the summer.

Over the course of the 12-week program, students engage in hands-on projects that directly support the NNSS mission areas. This opportunity allows them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges and develop an understanding of what careers in technical or professional fields might look like.

“Students from across the country have joined us for this year’s program, bringing fresh perspectives and talent from a wide range of universities,” said NNSS Student Program Coordinator Renee Wooster. “We’re proud to kick off this program for the 7th year and welcome this group as they support national security.”

The NNSS summer interns are majoring in a variety of academic areas – engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, business administration and other related fields – and represent the following universities:

• Appalachian State University

Established in 2019, the Student Program was built to enable hands-on work experience, mentorship in various disciplines and professional development opportunities for college students. While the program began as an in-person only experience, the NNSS now offers in-person and hybrid positions to allow students to have a personalized internship experience.
