In its seventh year, the 2025 Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) Student Program saw more than 70 students take part in 12-week summer internships at NNSS locations across the United States. As part of the experience, students gained hands-on practice through assigned projects, collaborated with subject matter experts and mentors, and most importantly, contributed to our vital national security mission.

“We are investing in the future workforce,” said Talent Acquisition Manager Kavery Berndt. “By providing hands-on opportunities, mentorship and exposure to professional-level projects, we’re helping students build the skills they need to launch successful careers. At the same time, they are bringing in fresh perspectives, further strengthening the workforce.”

Established in 2019, the NNSS Student Program offers paid internships—available in in-person and hybrid formats—to provide students with mentorship, workplace training and real-world exposure to national security work.

As part of the program’s growth, students are required to showcase their project work at the end of the summer. Those selected by their departments also presented to senior leadership.

“By investing in our interns, we are investing in the future of the NNSS,” said University Relations Coordinator Nelida Rodriguez. “Every year our interns bring so much excitement and new ideas! They are ready to learn and gain real experience. This year was no different. At every event, students showed up eager and excited to learn about our mission.”

As a measure of the program’s success, 10 interns accepted full-time positions this year, and roughly 60 percent are staying on part time during the school year while they continue to work toward their degrees.

“It’s always hard to see the program come to an end, but watching students transition into full-time roles is incredibly rewarding,” added Berndt. If you or someone you know is interested in an NNSS internship, applications for the 2026 Student Program are now open! Apply by Jan. 30, 2026.
