Making a difference for a local veteran

As a proud partner of Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada, Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) employees renovated the home of a local U.S. Air Force veteran for Make a Difference Day Oct. 26.

Throughout the month, a core team of NNSS volunteers dedicated their after-work and weekend hours to electrical, irrigation, masonry and carpentry work. NNSS managing and operating contractor Mission Support and Test Services sponsored the costs of much-needed roof repairs to the 1970 home. The efforts culminated with 34 employee volunteers bringing the project over the finish line with trim painting, sprinkler repair, fixture installations, landscaping and debris removal on Make a Difference Day, Rebuilding Together’s annual volunteer day with community partners.

“It’s going to make it a lot easier for me to maintain,” said homeowner Maurice Showers. “To get it to this point took a neighborhood with the whole crew that’s here. They’ve been phenomenal. What they’ve done is beyond thanks that I can give. I’m so extremely grateful for all that’s happened here, and I’ve met some pretty wonderful people in the process.”

This is the NNSS’ second Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada event of 2024, following the renovation of a Henderson couple’s home in April for National Rebuilding Day. Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada works to improve the safety, economic security and wellbeing of low-income veterans, seniors and individuals with disabilities while building community connections between homeowners and the local organizations, like the NNSS, that serve them.

“Completing our annual Make a Difference project for a veteran feels especially meaningful this year,” said NNSS Outreach & Engagement Specialist McKenzie Krause, who led coordination with Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada and the NNSS. “The work that we do is always gratifying and rewarding, but giving back to someone who has sacrificed so much for our country brings an added joy to the work. It was a small way to show gratitude for his service and to support him as he has supported us all.”
