The Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) is committed to fostering innovation and developing future talent. One way we demonstrate that commitment is through our continued sponsorship of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Innovation Day Capstone Design Project Competition. Innovation Day, an annual event hosted by the University’s College of Engineering, showcases student-driven inventions and projects that address real-world challenges. The Capstone Project Competition is a highlight of the day, where top senior undergraduate project teams compete for monetary prizes donated by the NNSS.
This year, three highly qualified NNSS engineers volunteered as judges for the competition. Their involvement ensures a rigorous and insightful evaluation of the student projects, providing valuable feedback and recognition for the budding engineers.

The benefits of NNSS’s involvement in Innovation Day are multi-faceted, offering meaningful engagement opportunities, chances for interested students to discuss career paths with seasoned NNSS engineers, and a forum to gain fresh perspectives on challenging problems. The NNSS’s dedication to academic excellence and technological advancement at the University goes beyond support and sponsorship for Innovation Day and student capstone projects. In addition to a $150,000 philanthropic grant, NNSS has invested $1.4 million in subcontracted work at the University, largely in support of Site-Directed Research and Development projects overseen by the NNSS.
